OniiChat Review 2026: Pros, Cons, and Who Is It For

First impression? I opened the homepage and got hit with a wall of anime thumbnails, and honestly I knew within about four seconds whether this site was for me. If cat ears do nothing for you, close the tab, save yourself the time. The name itself (onii-chan, big brother, yeah, that's the vibe) tells you exactly which corner of the internet this comes from.

But here's the thing, and I say this as someone who's tested a stupid number of these sites... the chat quality is better than the presentation suggests. I ran a long conversation with a custom character I'd written a fairly specific personality for, someone anxious and sarcastic, and the bot held that voice for a solid forty messages. Gems are the second currency and you spend them on messages, image unlocks, and premium characters. You get a trickle for free through daily login rewards, or you buy them outright.

There are 28 tags for browsing, covering everything from the standard stuff to genuinely weird niches like giantesses, dark fantasy, and what the community calls saviorfagging, which is roleplay built around rescuing a broken character. Some of those tags are stacked. Others have like six characters in them and feel abandoned. There's also a story mode that puts you inside pre-written scenarios rather than an empty conversation, and honestly that's a nice on-ramp if you freeze up staring at a blinking cursor.

Monthly is $9.99. The annual plan bills at $59.99 up front, which shakes out to roughly $4.99 a month, and if you already know you like this kind of site that's genuinely good value. Subscription gets you unlimited messages, voice notes, in-chat pictures, and the NSFW layer that's completely locked off otherwise.

Then there's gems, sold separately: $9.99 for 750, $14.99 for 1500, $19.99 for 3750, $29.99 for 7500, and $49.99 for 15000. You need them for messages on the free tier, for unlocking image sets, and for grabbing premium characters. Some of the rarer ones run 6000 gems, which is not a small ask. I'd say most people should ignore gem packs entirely unless there's one specific character they're obsessed with.

Free users survive on daily reward gems. It's slow, but it works, and you can absolutely poke around for a week without paying anything. Just remember the NSFW wall is real and no amount of free gems gets you past it.

I went in expecting a shallow anime skin over a mediocre chatbot and came out kind of impressed, at least on the conversation side. The AI holds character, the library is deep in ways most competitors aren't, and the yearly price is close to a bargain. That's the good stuff and it's real.

The problems are equally real though. Image generation is a mess right now, several tags are basically empty, and the decision to lock all adult content behind the paywall with zero preview is going to frustrate a chunk of people who signed up expecting otherwise. Add gem packs on top of a subscription and the monetization starts feeling a bit grabby.
